Ideal Culture and Real Culture

An ideal culture represents the values of a society that are accepted in principle. On the other hand, real culture refers to the values that are actually practiced. For example, ideally, people agree it is better to wait until marriage before having sex (ideal culture); in reality, however, the majority of people (including those who agree with ideal cultural values concerning sex) will have sex before marriage.
